Sunita Agarwal is a Kolkata-based visual artist whose work transforms human emotion, memory, and social reality into compelling visual narratives. Rooted in empathy and restraint, her practice is shaped by a deep sensitivity to the lives of women and children, and by a storytelling impulse that gives form to what is often left unspoken.

Drawing from personal perception and lived experience, Sunita builds her compositions through a nuanced interplay of vibrant and subdued colour, allowing each work to carry both emotional depth and narrative clarity. Her palette is often deliberately restrained, typically limited to three to five colours, enabling form, atmosphere, and expression to emerge with greater intensity.

For Sunita, painting has long been an emotional sanctuary — a space for introspection, discovery, and continual exploration. She sees the creative process as a journey in which the outer world and inner life converge, revealing emotions that are deeply personal yet universally resonant.

Working across oil, charcoal, acrylic, and mixed media, she explores the distinct expressive possibilities of each medium while maintaining a consistent emotional depth. From 1987 to 1990, Sunita studied at the Birla Academy of Art and Culture in Kolkata, where she trained under the distinguished Bengali artist Smt. Karuna Saha. Under her mentorship, she came to understand art not merely as an aesthetic pursuit, but as a profoundly human mode of expression — one capable of touching lives, shaping awareness, and inspiring change. This understanding continues to guide her practice, which remains committed to empathy, compassion, and social consciousness.
